Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi is a South African politician and Zulu tribal leader who founded the Inkatha Freedom Party in 1975 and served as minister of Bantustan KwaZulu until 1994. He was South Africa's Interior Minister from 1994-2004. He is often referred to as Shenge, praised by the Buthelezi family. During most of the racist period, Buthelezi was considered one of the main black chiefs. He played a key role in creating a framework for a negotiated resolution to the racial conflict in South Africa, signing Mahlabatini's historic declaration of faith in 1974 with Harry Schwarz. During the CODESA negotiations in the early 1990s, he represented Inkatha. After applying universal suffrage in the general elections of 1994, Buthelezi led the IFP to join the government of national unity led by Nelson Mandela. Buthelezi was Minister of the Interior until 2004 .
